No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips

The Netherlands has a lot more to offer than windmills, cheese and tulips. Design, for instance. All over the World, Dutch designers are renowned for their conceptual abilities and their ability to translate these concepts into designs that are suitable for mass production. ‘No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips’ puts work on display that is typical of this Dutch design mentality. 'No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips’ will present 21 works by 19 designers from The Netherlands. The objects vary from furniture and interior accessories to household items and jewellery, and will be presented as a still life, like those familiar to us from the ‘old masters’. ‘No Windmills, Cheese or Tulips’ is part of NL4 Design, a programme of activities initiated by Brainport Eindhoven, the municipalities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the BNO (the Association of Dutch Designers) and Premsela (the Dutch platform for design and fashion) to create an unequivocal and recognisable international profile for the Netherlands as a design country and to promote the export of Dutch design.

【SHI RO KA SHI】

Star Light Navigation

“Sound and light.” The sound everyone hears before being born into this world is the wound of a mother’s heart. The sounds of the external world can be heard through the mother. When one is born, the light of the world can then been seen. The light that has been given to us never changes. Light is one of the most familiar things for us, and yet it is not easy to grip and has a mysterious element. Rakelmejal shows the importance of light through shapes. The space of “sound and light” is expressed by the speaker’s fusing light together with time.

PLAY + WORK / WORK + PLAY

The exhibition Work + Play / Play + Work, is presented by a team of first and second year students from KIDI Parsons, a design institute located in Kanazawa and affiliated to Parsons the New School for Design in New York City.

Student teams reflected on the opposing concepts of “play” and “work”, focusing on specific related situations they had either experienced or researched, and then analyzed the apparent contrary nature.

The goal was then to produce a new device, scenario or situation for adults that combined these two dualistic ideas in an unorthodox manner. A successful result would break people free from routines and stimulate the imagination, thus promoting relaxation, innovation and creativity.

Dog Chair

Dog Chairs: A chair has four legs. What do four legs remind you of, if not a dog? There are other similarities. Both a dog and a chair can have different characters depending on its size and proportion ; just as there are different kinds of dogs such as Chihuahuas, Shibas, and German Shepherds, chairs range from baby chairs, to lounge chairs, to thrones. Embracing such a thought, we tried to make this chair have a dog-like presence that is physically affectionate and always makes us feel relaxed. (Atelier Bow-Wow) / Production support by graf.

routine work overdose / AREA Tokyo

Interior design meets images in a playful way. Many people nowadays have lost a sense of play. We are made tense by having to face reality and daily life, and having a sense of play in our free time can cure our woes. Area Tokyo is trying to re-conceptualize our living spaces. In this collaboration, the Shimura Brothers, who work in film and have presented their work at the Cannes film festival, add their sense of play to furniture design. The exhibition space includes a 47 square-meter display window, through which images will be projected at night-something that just has to be seen. Some people have overdosed on the creature comforts of daily life. This is the only facility for treating people who have overdosed on daily life. You can think of the glass front of the exhibition space as scanning patient’s illnesses in order to treat them, and they get injections of lost dreams and chance in order to treat their illness.

We repair broken things. Not things that just happened to break, but things which we broke intentionally and then fixed. It is difficult to repair something completely, and return it to its original state. Although we couldn't repair things perfect, we find that we are delighted to construct something new from the broken thing. When we were kids, we had a wonderful and exciting time to reconstruct things. It's like just "a designer's way of playing" we think.
